Camping at Cumberland River, Lorne

By sheer coincidences, I've found myself along the Great Ocean Road quite a bit recently. A rainy day detour back to Melbourne via the Twelve Apostles was subsequently followed up with a long weekend camping trip to Cumberland River, just outside of Lorne.

I was armed with anti-nausea medication for the windy trip along the coast line, so could enjoy the stunning view of the ocean as we made our way through the coastal towns of Anglesea, Airey's Inlet, and Lorne with a soundtrack of Tegan and Sara, Taylor Swift, and Courtney Barnett.

For the next three days, we'd be camping on a gorgeous riverside spot at the Cumberland River holiday park. After the tents were assembled, we set up a campfire and enjoyed the total serenity of being surrounded by mountains and birdsong.

As dusk drew near, we feasted on banana bread warmed by the fire, fried halloumi sandwiches, and some of our favourite Australian beer (no, not Fosters).

The next morning I awoke to a chorus of kookaburra's, and eventually sleepily stumbled out of my tent and onto the dewy grass. My friends were also emerging and reported that kangaroos and wombats had roamed through our campsite during the night, nibbling grass near their tents.

After getting ready, our group set off on one of the many hiking tracks in the area - this particular one would follow Cumberland River all the way up to Cumberland Falls. This is one of the more beautiful river valleys in the Otways, with dramatic cliffs, and peaceful pools in which to cool off on a hot summer day. It's not the easiest walk, as there are numerous river crossings and some scrambling over rocks.

Once we arrived at the falls we ate sandwiches we'd prepared back at camp, and snacked on mandarines and chocolate. It was an extremely peaceful spot, and for the majority of the time we were there we had the falls to ourselves.

On the way back we made the steep climb up Castle Rock, and spotted koalas and wedge-tailed eagle (the largest bird of prey in Australia) along the way. The walk was strenuous but we were eventually rewarded once we reached the lookout with panoramic views over Cumberland River and the coast below.

After a long, sweaty walk back to camp, we collapsed around the fire with a cold beer and hot food. It was such a nice way to unwind after a pretty exhausting day.

Cumberland River was the perfect place to unwind and such a scenic spot for camping. I definitely recommend it if you're on holiday in Victoria!
