Let's make one thing clear: Melbourne certainly has no shortage of Japanese restaurants. In fact, we have an abundance of ridiculously fantastic Japanese restaurants - not that I'm complaining. At this point, I already have my firm favourites and haven't really felt the need to stray from them.
As luck would have it - or more accurately, a need to collect my contact lenses - I was in Moonee Ponds last weekend and finally decided to try out a cute little Japanese restaurant that is conveniently located across from the train station. I Dream Of Sushi (presumably named after the documentary Jiro Dreams Of Sushi, about legendary sushi chef Jiro Ono) is a small eatery yet boasts a pretty impressive menu, all of which is available to either eat in or takeaway. As I watched the train I intended to catch sail by, I called in to find out what they were serving in their bento boxes that day (teriyaki chicken) and ended up buying one. For $14 I received the most enormous bento box I've ever had, packed full of delicious treats that I couldn't wait to devour when I got home. They'll also throw in a mug of miso soup with your order too!
The verdict? It was good. Really good. The tempura vegetables were incredibly tasty, the dressing on the chicken was perfect, and the miso sauce on the beans was absolutely delicious. The whole meal was incredibly filling too; I just barely finished the entire thing!
While on the whole I find Moonee Ponds a bit of a mixed bag, there are definitely hidden gems amongst the discount garbage stores, and I Dream Of Sushi is one of them.
